Assorted Heirloom TomatoesCurbstone Valley Gardens

The gardens here at the farm, like the orchard, are slowly evolving. With both areas now fully deer fenced, the fun can begin! Over the remainder of winter we will construct our raised beds so that our seedlings can be transplanted this spring. The vegetable gardens are situated just uphill of the orchard on a flat outcropping overlooking one of the creeks.

We have ordered most of our seeds already for 2010, and this year we're adding some new varieties of organic heirloom tomatoes to the garden. For information about our 2009 harvest see our Tomato Harvest blog post!

Vegetable varieties we've selected for 2010 include:

Beans: Spanish Musica, Foremost (Green), Rocdor (Yellow Wax)

Beets: Red Ace, Golden

Broccoli: Blue Wind

Carrots: Scarlet Nantes, Rainbow Hybrid

Cucumber: Chelsea Prize (English)

Lettuce: Red Lollo, Grand Rapids, Red and Green Oakleaf

Misc Greens: Space Spinach, Tatsoi Asian Greens, Red Winter Kale, Five Color Silverbeet Swiss Chard, Red-Veined Sorrel

Onion: New York Early (storage), Walla Walla; White Spear (bunching)

Parsnip: Javelin

Peas: Progress #9

Peppers: Carmen, Lipstick, Chocolate Bell, Jalapeño, Villancho

Potatoes: Rose Apple Finn, Yukon Gold, All Blue

Squash: Zucchini 'Raven', Butternut 'Waltham', Pumpkin 'Baby Pam'

Heirloom Tomatoes: Argentina, Illini Star, Texas Star, German Red Strawberry, Salisaw Cafe, Beam's Yellow Pear, Cherokee Purple, Black Pear, and Persimmon

Various flowers will be planted throughout the vegetable gardens, to encourage pollinators to visit our plants, including Borage, Clary Sage, Goldenrod 'Summer Showers', Anise Hyssop, Monarda, and Nasturtium 'Copper Sunset'.

Of course, the garden wouldn't be complete without an assortment of herbs, including 'Nufar' and 'Aroma 2' Basil, Rosemary, broadleaf Sage, Oregano, Tarragon, Dill, and Thyme.
